Urban Transport 2015

October 23rd, 2014

“The continuing requirement for better urban transport systems and the need for a healthier environment has added to the increasing success of this annual meeting which attracts international delegates from many different countries. Innovative systems, new approaches and original ideas need to be thoroughly tested and critically evaluated before they can be implemented in practice, which highlights the importance of meetings such as this. Moreover, there is a growing need for integration with telecommunications systems and IT applications in order to improve safety, security and efficiency. The Meeting also addresses the need to solve important pollution problems associated with urban transport in order to achieve a healthier environment.

The variety of topics covered by the conference reflects the complex interaction of the urban transport systems with their environment and the need to establish integrated strategies. The aim is to arrive at optimal socio-economic solutions while reducing the negative environmental impacts of current transportation systems.”

Highlights of the PodCar8 and ITS World Congress – sponsored by ATRA

September 26th, 2014

Time: 3 PM Eastern US Time – (7 PM GMT)

Call-in: 301-405-2900
Participant Code: 827148
Webinar (for slides): https://webmeeting.umd.edu/seyoung_adhoc

Two major conferences that impact interest in advanced transport occurred in the last month. PodCarCity8 in Stockholm (Sept 3-5) emitted strong signs that ATN is now a serious contender for urban transit implementations. Well attended by many ATRA members, this conference has emerged as the yearly focal point for ATN interested. The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) world congress was also held in September, in Detroit, Michigan, the traditional automotive mecca for the US. The momentum in the automated and autonomous vehicle arena has direct bearing on public mobility.

As a benefit to ATRA members, a short conference call is being held to hear first-hand from ATRA members of the highlights and impressions.

Program
3:00: Opening and introductions of speakers: Stan Young

3:05: PodCarCity8 – Overview and highlights: Lawrence Fabian

3:15 – 3:40:
Swedish Perspectives: Ingmar Andreason
Architectural viewpoint: Shannon McDonald
Industry Opportunities: Peter Muller

3:40 – 3:50: ITS World Highlights with respect to Automation: Stan Young

The Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV2015)

September 10th, 2014

iv2015

THE INTELLIGENT VEHICLES SYMPOSIUM (IV2015) is a premier annual forum sponsored by the IEEE INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS SOCIETY (ITSS).

Researchers, practitioners, and students from universities, industry, and government agencies are invited to present their latest works and to discuss research and applications for Intelligent Vehicles and Vehicle-Infrastructure Cooperation. The technical presentations are characterized by a single oral session and multiple poster sessions where all attendees can exchange ideas in an informal atmosphere. Tutorials will be offered on the first day followed by three days of presentations and a vehicle demonstration day. An exhibition area will be available for the presentation of products and projects.

Automated Vehicles Symposium 2014

May 28th, 2014

automated vehicles symposium 2014

This symposium will focus on challenges and opportunities related to the increasing automation of motor vehicles as well as the environments in which they operate. The symposium will build on the 2012 and 2013 workshops on the state-of-the-art in road vehicle automation research and will explore automation developments that may affect the future of surface transportation and transportation organizations.

Part of the Automated Vehicles Symposium 2014 hosted by AUVSI and TRBwww.automatedvehiclessymposium.org

Mid-Year Meetings of:
APO20 – Emerging and Innovative Public Transport and Technologies
APO40 – Automated Transit Systems
Committees of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies.

In this hands-on, interactive workshop, participants will re-imagine the built environment enabled by automated vehicle technologies.

Small, eclectic teams of experts combining knowledge of a wide range of fields – city planning, infrastructure and architecture, car design, engineering, software and systems – will collaborate on scenarios. Each team starts with a different “before” condition that presents roadway, neighborhood/district and regional scales, described in words, images, maps and diagrams. They will also be provided with a time-horizon for which to develop a new scenario based on the presence of specified types of vehicles with varying degrees of shared mobility, connected vehicle technology, and autonomous operation. Case studies will include a range of modes of transportation (air, bus, rail) and roadways (freeway, arterial, residential), land use (residential, commercial, agricultural, industrial) and building type (parking, dwelling, etc.), and density.

Teams will generate, through different interactive methods and writing/visualizing techniques, “after” scenarios in order to think through the challenges and benefits to our built environment that an autonomous mobility future can hold. Each team’s work will be facilitated by an urban designer or architect.
